potting soil question

nikon Apr 07, 2004 05:19 PM

For those of you that use some type of dirt or potting soil, what are you using? I went to Home Depot today to see what they had for potting soil stuff and they had something called TopSoil and another thing of Peat Moss. I didn't get either cause I wasn't sure and figured I would ask experiences and brnads first. Everything I looked at said organic but not many of these things have an ingredient list. What you using and where you gettin it? Thanks.

I have a Home Depot and WalMart close by. haven't looked into landscapers yet.

Thanks

folks sure seem to remember all soil as "potting soil" for some reason

potting soil sucks, it doesn't do anything well that you need a substrate to do. you can read a bit about soils on our site's FAQ, and if you want a "mix your own" try topsoil/sand/vermiculite in a 50/25/25 mix. that mix holds burrows well, digs well, and can be used by the animals.

potting soil is a different mix, with lots of different ingredients, and does very little well, except maybe pot plants

if I have a millit sand mix right now, you think that I could just throw some topsoil in and mix it all up? It's either gonna be mixing it all up or no topsoil cause I am not willing to change from the millit right now - he loves it. Let me know what you think or if the mix is a bad idea. thanks all
