Dumerils Problem!!!

ReptileMatt Apr 07, 2004 08:27 PM

I have had this dumerils for about 2 months now and he has not eaten. He has not eaten one meal since I have had him. I was told this is normal and he will when he wants!! Is this correct or is this not true?

How do you have the snake set up? What temperature, hides or no hides, type of substrate, etc.? Dumerils need quiet and security. The substrate needs to be something they can burrow in or they have to have plenty of hides. They are ambush predators and don't like to feel exposed. Temperature requirements are similar to redtails but mine seem to prefer temps that are slightly lower (ambient cage temps of 80F with a basking spot of 88F or so). Offer food at night, preferably prekilled or f/t, and leave it outside the hide the snake is in. It will usually be gone by morning. Above all, refrain from handling the snake until it eats at least a few meals in a row. Handling can easily stress new snakes and put them off feed.
