The first date? introducing my boy and girl geckos

RedQuake Apr 07, 2004 09:43 PM

I know its a bit late in the season to think about breeding but i'd like to ask anyways.....seeing as Boo and my girls have never been exposed to eachother how exactly should i introduce them? Do you just put them together when your sure you want to breed them or is it Ok to put their tanks side by side so they can see eachother and get used to eachother.........OR is that just torture for the poor boy gecko? (thats what i'm concerned about......stressing out Boo)

Thanks for your input

Hi red,

It’s not too late to get started. There are many different preferences on how to introduce a male and female, I’ll try to explain what’s worked best for me.

Some people keep their males and female together year round, I have 3 pairs living together this year, and they seem to be doing very well. If you think anyone is getting picked on, or not getting their fair share of food, then they should be separated.

Most of my breeding occurs on supervised ‘dates’ where I put the female into the male’s cage. A bit of warning: it is much more likely for you to get bitten when introducing or removing pairs. If the female becomes agitated (tail waiving or biting), remove the male first and give the female a minute to calm down before removing her. If she is unreceptive, like I mentioned above, don’t give up hope, just try again in a few days. When she is ready she will just sit still and let the male do his thing.

Hope this helps, and let us know if you have any more questions!

Hi Dave

Thanks alot of the info i do appreciate it I was planning on putting Zoe and Boo together. I was checking out scales yesterday to confirm her weight but they didn't have any in stock here in town (backordered). Zoe is, however, much larger than Flame is (((who laid her second clutch for me this morning))). I'm thinking i'll give her until next season to breed her though, allow her to get a bit older, she's not a year old yet. I know its more based on weight but seeing as i have two new eggs, if i can successfully hatch these ones i'll feel better about breeding. Also, i dont' have another tank setup for her and i'd prefer to be able to monitor her food intake while she's gravid. The info does help though. I'll be placing the boys tank in a new unit which will give me better access and i'll be able to monitor the first date better

Thanks again
