Safe real plants?

RedQuake Apr 07, 2004 10:08 PM

Are there any sites or references i can locate that list safe plants to use in a tropical gecko setup? Also i'd like to maybe make my leo setups more natualistic with real plants but using pots so that i can maintain a tile substrate. Thinking about using styrophome covered in a mortar mix (etc.) and having the plants implanted in them (there was something about doing this for a Fattail setup in one of my books, i'll have to find the book though LOL).

Thanks for the help

Hey Red I've been trying to find out the same thing. So far I have re-potted a jade plant and an unprickly cactus in bead-a-beast. Hopefully they'll last like this without the nutients from potting soil. The soil most plants come in has fertilers and other things that can be bad for leos. However I have yet to find out if the plants are toxic.

I have found a couple air plants which look really neat, they have no roots and don't grow in soil. You can stick them on anything and they only need to be soaked in water once a week. This way the humidity level in the tank won't go up. They are hard to find because they are not the most attractive looking plants to just have hanging around your house. Many of the amphibian (sorry my spelling becomes terrible this time of night) web sites have different types of un-toxic plants available as well. I just found these ones at a local garden center, they were getting rid of them because they are not popular. The two of them came on a piece of driftwood and cost $20 (on sale from $45) but I'm sure you could find cheaper.

Hope this helped a bit, sorry for the terrible gramar, I'm too tired to make sense . I'll try to find a site I was looking at that had many different types of non-toxic plants for sale.

Only two more weeks left untill I get my leos , and thanks once again for all your help in the past.

Here's the site http://207.36.165.48/home.htm they have some really amazing set-ups, I'm not sure if they ship though.

I want to set up a nice vivarium and maybe get some arrow frogs or something. I promised myself I wont do it for at least a year, I think I have an animal addiction... HONESTLY, I want to take them all home with me , lol. Animals have become my escape from the crule world humans have created, their lives are so much simpler. After a bad day I can just look at them and they put a smile on my face.

Wow did I ever get off topic, sorry. Time for bed, let me know what you find and post lost of pics when you set it all up.

Thankyou I just want to add a bit more realizm to my tanks. Alot of them look rather bare (sp?) hehe yes i'm tired and my spelling sucks LOL I might go with all artificial plants (i'm lazy too LOL) but to have a real life vivarium would be cool especially for my crested geckos. I'm like you as well, i like my animals almost more than i do people. Lately its been the rath of people thats caused me much grief so after a hard day coming home and watching my animals is a great escape

I've taken pics of my new eggs, but i have to log in with the other computer to post them. Be back in a bit

Thanks again
Red

That’s cool about the air plants; I’m going to have to look into those. Most other plants require daily watering, and I bet that adds a lot of humidity to the enclosure. Not a good thing for leos.

I’d imagine these plants need a good light source, something I haven’t worked with before, but I think it would be worth it. I have fake plastic plant pieces in a lot of my geckos’ cages and they don’t seem to use them much, it would be cool to have a natural alternative. Let us know how it works for you and post some pics if you can!

Hey Dave, Here is a pic. There is one air plant on the fake red rock and on on the drift wood. The acctually look much healthier now, they looked almost dead when I got them. The light in the pic is a UV light. I think I'm going to set it to go on for only 6-8 hours because leos don't enjoy the bright light. However, I have read and been told that there are many positives to using UV, for one it helps them break down calcium.

I hope this is the right picture

We all can’t wait to see what kind of leos you get. Your setup is really awesome, and I’m sure your gecko(s) will be happy in there, isn’t the wait driving you nuts?

You can try a Pothos plant. They are very safe for chameleons and seeing as how leos aren't plant eaters, it should be safe for them, too. The plant is really easy to take care of. If your're interested, just let me know.

Actually i have a bunch of artificial pothos plants for my crested setups and i was wondering what the real thing would look like hehe. Its mostly for my cresteds that i'd like real plants.....but adding more, either artificial or real, to the leos tanks would brighten them up too

I'll keep everyone posted on how they turn out, in the mean time i thank you for the info.
