Advice on what type of boa to get, please.

Buffysmom Apr 07, 2004 10:32 PM

I really love the look of boas! I love the shape of the head & the thickness of the body. However, I don't have the room for a 6 foot snake & don't want something that will eventually have to eat rabbits or prey larger than rats. I've considered the Kenyan Sand Boas, but they lack the head shape of the traditional boas. I'm hoping for something that could live its life in a 20 long or so. Any suggestions?

To be fair to 6 foot boas, they wouldn't have to eat anything larger than rats. The smallest 'traditional' boas like Hogg Islands and rainbow boas are still going to outgrow a 20 long, since the longest boa I'd put in a 20 long would be a 3 footer. so I can't really think of anything... Hey, this entire post is kind of pointless!

Well, I talked to my hubby about space, because I really want a boa & he's come up w/ an idea to build a cage for one. So, now that I have the room, what type of boa do you all recommend? I don't want the biggest one out there, nothing enormous, just a boa...

THEIR INTAKE, SO IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ONE SMALL, YOU SHOULD ONLY FEED IT ONE VERY SMALL PREY ITEM ONCE EVERY FOUR TO SIX WEEKS. A BOA CAN REACH 5FT. IN ONE YEAR OR IT CAN TAKE 10 YEARS TO REACH THIS SAME SIZE IF FED ACCORDINGLY. BOAS WILL ALSO LIVE ALOT LONGER IF FED THIS WAY. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PURCHASE AND I HOPE THIS HELPS.

Really? So it's better to feed them more sparingly? I mean, I'm not a power-feeder fan or anything & would never push food to get quick growth, but in mammals that low-feed-slow-growth ratio would be considered failure to thrive. Obviously reptiles & mammals are very different, but please help me understand how & why this is.
My greatest interest is in an animal that will be appropriately-sized for my life & whose needs I can best meet throughout its long life. I won't get an animal who's going to get too big for me to properly care for. Any info is appreciated.

No, it's not ok...that person is giving you nasty, dangerous information. An underfed boa will starve to death, eventually. Its growth will be stunted, sure...and it will suffer all of the accompanying problems associated with malnutrition.

It will not live longer. It will most likely never see adulthood. I don't expect it to live for more than a couple of years with that treatment...probably far less. People actually used to BELIEVE things like what mr. allcaps there said...

The truth is, treating a boa that way would be animal cruelty, and I think if he's treating his animals that way, he should be prosecuted. Ignorance is no excuse.
