Feeding in tank???

Nicki Apr 08, 2004 12:37 PM

Lower down, I read a posting where 2 people advised someone to feed their snakes in their own enclosures.

Everything I've read before now has said that that is NOT a good idea.

Can anyone tell me why it would be ok to feed in the enclosure?

Thanks!

I feed inside.....and have no problems with it....no strikes when not feeding or anything

I first take my snake out of the tank. Then I drop the mouse in. Then I put the snake back in the tank with it. I've never had any problems. This way the snake never assosiates you picking him out of the tank with food.

Hope this helps

a few reasons to feed in tank...(in my opinion)

1) if you have a problem feeder you can leave feed the snake in the area it feels most comforabtle. also you can leave the (prekilled) mouse in the tank overnight and many young BPs need the dark and silence to feed.

2) the snake should not associate your hand with feeding as long as you open the top of the cage enough for other things.

reasons not to feed snakes in enclosures:

1) if you have loose substrate the snake could ingest it

2) if you have more than one snake in the same enclosure (I made that mistake once. they will fight over the food item even if one of the snakes has already refused the meal the fact that the second one is eating it might change his mind)

anyone else feel free to add

It's okay to feed in the enclosure if you're not using a loose substrate and you don't have feeding problems or a nippy BP.

The snake won't associate your hand with feeding unless you smell like food.

I feed in cage, I use aspen.
What I do is put a sheet of paper down under the snake and dangle the mouse/rat once they get a hold of it I just watch them to make sure no one takes their food off the paper.
