They're the soft (well, more firm than soft) young bamboo shoots that come in a can. Might give some better variety in the diet but I want to make sure it's 100% safe before I feed it to Ra.

I have no idea about the inherent safety of bamboo shoots.

However, I would be extremely cautious about feeding anything out of a can. Commercial canning involves all kinds of chemicals, and traditionally a lot of sodium, though that may not be the case with bamboo. I have to admit that I am not an advocate of canned foods for people either, and tend to err on the Organic/fresh side. In all seriousness though, be very careful, the chemicals and by products of canning have been theorised to link to problems in people, and the Uros are way smaller than we are! Not too mention they would obviously never come accross preservatives or leached aluminum in nature.

I am interested to see what the general thought of the group is.

I asked this question to Doug Dix and he said it should be fine but it would be mainly for roughage. He is in the process of growing some and will soon be feeding them to his uros (so far, he's been feeding this to the deer).
