SALAMANDER DIET

HATZICGIRL Apr 08, 2004 12:54 PM

My neighbour gave my daughter a pet salamander which he caught in his ditch eel trap. I live in Mission, BC, Canada. I believe this is an immature salamander because he still has feathery gills. I have him in a bowl with rocks he can get out on. I have bought him salamander pellets but he doesn't seem to eat them. I have also tried giving him small worms. Is there something else I should give him.

Worms are your best bet. Also you could try frozen fish foods. Ideally earthworms are the best, so keep with those.

Do you have any photos of it? If it still has the gills it would be either an immature larvae, or it could be possible that it is a species that keeps its gills until adult hood.

He has been eating a few earthworms but I'm not sure if he is getting enough. I'm also concerned that his water is too warm. I have some photos but I can't email them on this forum.
