Got a couple questions.........

Iguanamom Apr 08, 2004 01:40 PM

Hi everyone. I need to purchase some new lights for my iggy , can anyone recomend a good site that is reasonable, to purchase lights? Need to get a new uvb bulb and nightime heat lamp. Thought i might get a better deal online than what im finding at the pet shops. Last time when i got a uvb bulb cost me about $60, but it was the kind that provides uvb and heat. Just thought i would see if i could find a better deal online. I havent been here in awhile, but Ozzy is doing great, growing like crazy. He is almost 3 feet long now. Found a new treat he loves even more than cantalope and that is strawberries. I sliced some up and took them in on a paper plate and started to dump them in the bowl, and he lunged for the plate and started chowing. About scared me to death at the time, wasnt really expecting it. Normally he will not eat if im there, he is weird about that. Waits till i leave the room and then eats. Anyway we are getting ready to move his cage. Right now its in my sons room, and well i dont think my son is paying enough attention and for space reasons we are going to move him into the living room. So he will get more interaction ect. But im wondering how much stress this will cause him, and my big concern is i have a cat and a dog. And ozzy doesnt seem to be too impressed with them. Is this something you think he will get used to. He has a really nice cage, and its pretty big, 6ft tall and 4ft wide. So any input you guys might have will be appreciated, i just dont want to stress him too much. Thanks again. Tami

I would surf around the various sites under the "cages/supplies" and "distributors" subsections within the "breeder/dealers/stores" section of this site. I recommend staying with the mercury-based lamps that provide both UVB and heat. Yes, they're expensive, but IMO they're worth it. I use 160-watt flood lamps. You might need a stronger one (or more than one) for an enclosure that big. (I also use ceramic heaters that stay on 24/7 for added nighttime warmth.) In comparing prices, watch out for shipping/handling costs.

As far as relocating the enclosure, there will be a period of stress to be sure, but as long as he's safe from dogs, cats, etc. inside the enclosure, he should be able to adjust fine. In fact, he may like it even more, just to be able to watch what's going in around the place. Be sure he has an out-of-the-way hidey place he can retire to so he can get away from all the action and have some peace and quiet when he wants to go to sleep.
