A funny story

cowtownherper Apr 08, 2004 02:36 PM

A dad here at the school brought me a snake he caught to identify yesterday. It was a little Texas Brown Snake, completly harmless. The first graders are studing reptiles right now. I'm bringing in some snakes for them to see next week. Anyway I saw one of the teachers and asked her if she wanted to show the snake to her kids before I released it. After school one of the teachers aids stopped me in the hall nad got all over me for bringing that snake into the school. I told her it was a harmless brown snake, and she assured me it was a moccasin. She knows because she has them living in her back yard. I had to bring up a picture on the computer to prove I didn't bring a venomus snake to school. I know one thing for sure. I'm not going to her house, shes probably got cobras in the front yard.

My stepdad caught a DeKay's last fall at work, and brought it home, insisting that he found a "baby copperhead". He said someone found it, and they caught it in a bucket. He poked it with a pen, and it kept striking at the pen, and trying to bite his hand.
He came in, and set the bucket on the table, and I reached in and picked it up laughing. He started screaming at me, because i'm going to get bitten, and it's going to get loose in the house. I said it's a harmless snake, and he insisted that I was wrong. He still doesn't believe me. It came up in conversation with one of his friends a couple weeks ago, and he said, "yeah, he says it's a 'deckays' snake.", while doing the little finger motions.

dont you just love banana eaters?

The sadly funny thing is is how many people swear all these snakes are venomous and they are the same people catching them and carrying them around?! I get people bringing me snakes and asking if it was 'poisonous'. I usually respond with....wouldn't that be the thing to know BEFORE you got close to it and pissed it off? No wonder people get bit. Darwin was right.
