Where to Begin With An Enclosure Size?

dchiboi Apr 08, 2004 02:42 PM

I don't have a WD yet, but I am in the process of learning as much as I can and about to build an enclosure for him/her. REPTILES Magazine's latest edition lists an enclosure size as 36 to 48 inches long, 16 to 24 inches deep and 48 to 72 inches tall. What size does everyone recommend? I know the bigger the better, but the place I want to place it has a maximum dimension of 52 inches long, 17 inches deep and 62 inches high. How important is the deapth?

The depth is important, your dragon could be nearly 40 inches long, and wouldn't be comfortable turning around in a 17 inch space. I wouldn't go any smaller than 24-30 inches in depth. The other dimensions are fine.

Thanx, I will have to reconsider where to place it. Also I have read that using mesh for the sides is not recommended due to humidity control and nose rubbing. Do you recommend glass, plexi-glass, something else? What ratio of solid material to screening would you recommend? I see some people only have screening on the top and the rest wood and glass.

My cage was plexi glass on the front, oak for the sides and back and peg board for the top. The more solid sides you have the better the cage holds in the heat and hunidity.
