provent a mites and plants. AND related questions

tvrsir Apr 08, 2004 04:55 PM

okay i've been waiting for my provent a mite a 10 days now should be coming tomorrow. during these time i have been trying to treat my boa with soaking. seems to work okay mites drop of her and dies. well what i'm concern about is that is provent a mite safe for live potted plants. i have a pothos plant in the cage. i know i should get rid of it but my boa sleeps and hides in it all the time. i went out and bought a spray made by GARDEN SAFE. it's called houseplant and garden insect spray. it suppose to kill mite and other stuff on contact. my question is ,is this toxic to my boa in any way. what should i do. i am going to take my cage apart and clean and disinfect my drift wood and enclosure and my snake. i also have reptile relief made by natural chemistry. it works on my snake but is it toxic for the pothos plant if i spray that on the leaves and soil of it thanks please let me know. also is provent a mite toxic to plants too?

I do use it and it is great stuff. What I have done with plants in the past that seems to work and Ive never killed one (although it would depend on what tupe it is). What I have done is first take the plant out of its pot throw away the soil and clean the pot and disinfect it. Then clean the plants roots clean of soil. Next get a no pest strip the yellow rubbery kind. Cut a small peice of it and place it in a small trash bag and place the plant in the trash bag for 2 or 3 days. This seemed to work for me. Then you rinse it really well and give it some water. I was actually told to do this at one of the nurseries because most plants have bugs on them anyway. This method kills pretty much everything lol. Then of course fresh soil and plant it in its pot again. You can keep it out of the cage for a while though to make sure its ok. And you might as well leave it out for the provent to work anyway. The mites might bury in the soil reducing the effects of the spray. Now Im not saying this wouldnt kill your plant. Just that Ive never killed a plant using this method. Any one else?

You can buy the pest strips at Walmart in my town, but... If this was my snake I would strip everything out of it's pen except for the snake on newspaper, water, and a hide box until I was sure all the mites were dead. Maybe buy a new plant for your snake after treatment? Anything you can do to speed up the process would get you back to enjoying your snake pest free faster. The more stuff you have in the pen will only make it harder to treat the animal. Cleaning the pen and animal as often as you can helps too. This is just my view, not the only one. Best of Luck to you and your snake..
