New Corn Owner - from West Virginia

FelanMoira Apr 08, 2004 07:11 PM

Howdy all! I'm a new corn owner ... we just bought "him" on March 27th, 2004.

He's a snow - I'll get pics when I can! He's 15 inches long and 12 grams. He's eating one frozen pinky every 4-5 days right now, with gusto. He's in a 7 1/2 gal plastic critter home, with Lizard Litter substrate, a hide (it's one of the fish aquarium decorations, but since he's got more than 1 entrance - he seems to really like it.), and a water bowl. I have a lamp I use as a heat lamp with a 60 watt bulb, and a heat tape pad underneath the cage, but it's been getting too hot, so we have to find a thermostat for it. But the cage has been about 75-85 degrees F, except when the heat tape was on.

We've been getting him out and handling him, because we don't want him associating the cage opening with being fed.

Anything I'm doing wrong or could just do better?

We've also got a breeding colony of mice (I go to school for vet tech and I got to bring them home from lab animal class) and one is definitely pregnant, and the other female might be (she was caught by the male on March 31st, so I'll know for sure soon) - so I've got a good supply (hopefully) of pinkies.

0.0.1 snow corn (is that right? - it's mael.female.unknown right?)
2.1 dogs
1.3 cats
0.1 rabbit
1.2 mice (soon to be 1.3 - have another female to add to the colony from school.)

Sounds like you've done your research/homework beforehand...Good for you!!! 75-85 is probably plenty of heat. You may not need the tape at all. Or see what the range is with the tape on and the bulb off. You're off to a great start. Enjoy! Duffy

Hello,
I live in West Virginia as well... Well that makes two snake people in this state in any case...
Just a bit of a pseudo-warning... It is not legal to keep any corn in captivity in this state... even morphs like albinos or snows.
This is not enforced at all... obviously... petstores openly sell corns ALL the time.
But just so you know... if the DMV ever smarts up to these kinds of things... (unlikely I know.... too busy with game animals)something like what went down in Ohio might happen, which would be just awful.... but anyway....
Glad to know there are others.
And good luck with your corn snake.

Hey, um, that sort of worries me. The herp laws in Utah are pretty dumb!!! I didn't check the laws on corns before I bought mine. I just assumed that they were legal since I bought mine in a pet shop. Does anyone know how I can find out for sure? I've used google to search for Utah's herp laws, but either there simply aren't any(which I know is not the case since there was a huge bust recently.....not with corns though)or they aren't really talked about much. Then again, how many people do a search about herp laws!?! Thank you for your input.

My thoughts are that most of us "low profile" herpers really don't have to worry about stupid laws. Here in Ohio, you have to get a special dispensation from the Pope to keep native species. But as long as you are not selling at the reptile shows or otherwise "in the business" ... I don't think there's much risk. One of these days, the wildlife people will finally wake up and realize that ENCOURAGING the keeping of CAPTIVE BRED native species will actually take the pressure off of the poaching of wildlife. Yeah ... because they actually are indigenous to WV. But if they bust me, they have to bust the guy I know who works for DNR in Elkins ... he has one (captive bred).

Also, there is a woman in my Lab Animal Class at school who is getting into breeding - she has 2 Oketee and 1 snow.

They've only been seen in this state on a hand full of occasions and only in morgan county.... And I believe the official sightings were many, many years ago.
Same sort of situation with pine snakes too.
weird...
