Questions about mites

lizliz710 Apr 08, 2004 10:44 PM

Ok i found out that my new Baby Red-tail Boa (April) had mites on monday we've been treating her since. How often should we spray the mite stuff on her and in the cage and when could be put the substate bakc intot he cage its been cleaned and dried. How long will it take before the mites are all gone and we have to keep doing this? Someone we knew said we should spray her every other day.

Wait a minute. What product are you using. With Provent-a-mite or Black Knight all you need is one treatment and then another a couple of weeks later. This stuff will kill snakes if used improperly. If you are using another product, it's not going to work so switch to Provent-a-Mite.

The lady at the Pet store sold us this bottle of De Flea Reptile Felief, its said to kill mites on contact. The bottle says spray on every 3 days but the lady said every other day. SO this stuff doesnt work? Where do you get Provent-a-mite? Its not in any of the local pet stores around here.... And how much does is cost? ok thanks!

I've never tried that product but I've heard that it's not all that effective. You can find Provent-a-Mite online. It WORKS. Your's might work also but Provent-a-mite will work extremely well. It works so well that you have to be careful with it. When I used it I thouroughly cleaned all the enclosures and added new substrate. Then I sprayed it down and left it to air out for several hours before putting the snakes back in. As far as getting the ones that are on the snake...nothing works better than soaking. But they'll die as soon as they get in the treated cage anyway. This stuff is residual and will keep working for awhile. It's best to repeat the treatment after a few weeks to get any mites that might have hatched in the interim. I've heard Black Knight works just as well but the method is different. I tried using ivermectin first and it didn't work very well.

martin excellent advice......there's one active ingredient in provent-a mite,"permethrin".it's 0.05% and the rest is inert ingredients,if i recall i paid about $20 for a can.if you go to wal mart in the band aid section there'a a product called lice bedding spray, (either nix brand or equate brand)that has permethrin in it at 0.25%,and cost $3-5 per can.when i run out i know where i'm getting my next can.

sorry typo, the amount of permethrin in provent-a-mite is 0.50%
