Savanna Attitude?

SavageRN Apr 09, 2004 01:12 AM

I work at a reptile store and just purchased a baby savanna. I chose by health first, and everything else second. After about a week, he/she turned real pissy. It will hiss and tailwhip if I even came close. I do not force the issue, and provided substantial hiding and quite places. I am wondering what I can do to calm he/she down. I do not want to handle it if it will get to stressed, but on the other hand I want to begin the taming process. Does anyone have any suggestions on techniques for taming small savannas. It may just have the small monitor complex as it is only a few weeks old. How can I assure it I am not a threat.

Thanks

That pissiness sounds good to me. Shes just being her normal self. Dont push the issue and play it by ear.

Give it time. Sav's should be pissy as babies, if they are healthy and alert they have no idea that your not out to eat them or hurt them, so they are defensive. Let this little one acclimate and calm down for about a month then start little bits at a time ten or fifteen minutes every other day to hold it. If it really is to frisky use a warm bath (not hot) just warm like 80 degrees for a fifteen minute soak and then hold it. This sometimes really relaxes them, and can allow for a more pleasurable time.

Thank's for the advice. I will play it easy and let her acclimate, and try to gain trust slowly.
