when they say cricket no bigger than between beardys eyes do they mean cricket body or cricket from head to end of the legs as theres a big diffrence in size between cricket body with or without legs????????

kephy Apr 09, 2004 08:54 AM

I think it means the size of the cricket's body, but I always go a little smaller just to be safe. For the babies you definately want the crickets to be small, because the smaller they are the softer they are.

As for the appetites, it's very normal for beardies to lose interest in food after a big journey like that. They should eat a little more each day as they settle in. In about a week you should expect them to eat at least 20-30 crickets a feeding, twice a day.

What Kephy said sounds about right. Some eat more, some less, but that's a good average. Also always feed a little smaller size than you think they can handle, babies can impact real easy.

lol!

Yeah, it shocked me too when I first heard it. It seems impossible, but wait until you see them go at it. These little guys devour a WHOLE LOT o crickets. They are eating MACHINES.

I got 7 beardies
2 kings
1 python
1 boa
5 nigerian uromastyx's
2 leporad gecko's
1 panther chemelon
I order 2000 crickets per week and place them into a large rubber maid tote. Just make sure that your hands and the box are in the tote when you open it. Shake and remove box but leave egg create in tote. Punch holes in top of tote for air. Place cricket food in tote. Also some toilet paper card board rolls.
When you want crickets take sandwich baggie, add calicum dust than take to tote, place in tote, with you hands in tote take toilet paper cardboard roll and place in baggie , shake, remove roll, hold bag together at top and shake crickets take to beardie enclousure and open up in enclosure. This should lessen crickets all over house a little bit. Remember crickets must be kept in a room that is warm in cold weather but in summer I put them in the garage. Now if only mice and rats did not smell so bad to raise.

HAVE FUN

When my beardie was a baby, she ate nothing but crickets. 25 a day was not unusual. They have voracious appetites and if you have more than one together they may even end up cannabalizing each other if y ou don't feed them enough.

Growing bodies. Nothing to worry about. As they mature they will want to eat greens. Older they get, more greens, less meat.

My beardie is 2 years old, and I give her nothing but 3 crickets a day. And greens. She is quite plump.

Make certain the size of the crickets is no larger than the distance between its eyes. The babies CAN get impacted easily.

Keep the basking spot about 95 to 100 degrees F. The rest of the area about 85 degrees. They thrive on UV and incondescent lights. The lights are as essential as food itself. Better yet let them have about 15 minutes of sunlight every morning (best on your person, or at the very least in a protective cage and no contact with the grass.

It's funny that noone mentioned to spray the babies a few times daily. Baby beardies can get dehydrated very easily. It'll take a little time before they learn to drink out of a water bowl.
