Bairds Pics

PKossak Apr 09, 2004 02:31 PM

Here's a few pics of my male Bairdi Ratsnakes

Male # 1

He wasn't too photogenic today, will try to get some better pics later

Male # 2

My female wasn't being very cooperative, but I'll try to post some pics of her later.

Thanks!

Are these Mexican Bairds? Do you know? I am thinking that because of the gray head. Great pictures.

I'm pretty sure they are Texas bairdi, however, I received them from Adam Block, and if I recall correctly, there was skepticism about whether or not one of his breeders was Mexican or part Mexican bairdi. Anyone know anything about this? Either way, I love these guys, probably my favorite snakes. Beautiful, great personality, and are a cinch to raise. However, you've also sparked my curiosity with this question...

Good question and observation. Adam Block emailed me that they were Texas Bairds to the best of his knowledge. Adam didn't have any locale data, but thought they were from the eastern part of their range. There have been questions regarding the male breeder Adam Block had. It definitely has a lot of orange gound color on the body and a gray head. Suggestion of a Texas/Mexican breeding has come out, but no one has given light to it. Of course, technically Bairdi taxonomy wise doesn't have any subspecies such as Mexican and Texas bairds. Here's a pic of a Don Gallagher produced Mexican baird which is on loan to me by Steve and Kelli Hammack.

Great photos. Bairds are awsome snakes. I have a female around 18 to 19 inchs. Very laid back, excellent feeder. I love the grey color with the saddle pattern they have as a hatchling, as well as the color changes they go through as they mature. Here is an older photo of mine. I'll have to update when I get a chance. Thanks for the pictures.

Nice bairdi Steve! Right on, these guys rock. The color change as they grow is amazing.

My 03 Bairdi is one of the most laid back snakes I have. I've enjoyed my Bairdi so much that I just purchased my second Ratsnake, an Everglades, from Dwight Good. So begins a growing addiction to Ratsnakes. I'm sure I'll end up with a Black Rat next, LOL

Thanks for the comments Steve. My wife says I told her "I only want one snake". I don't remember saying anything like that. LOL. This is one of the few times where "addiction" is a positive thing in my humble opinion. Here's a pic of my female everglades I hope will produce for her first time this year. Good luck Steve.
