size questions????

bpmaster123 Apr 09, 2004 05:38 PM

I am very confused. Some places i look say that a redtail will be 9 or 10 feet and feed on rabbits and some places say that they will be between 6-7.5 feet if you feed sparingly. This size would be perfect. I've always wanted a larger snake, but my parents don't. I really dont want to feed rabbits maybe small ones, but i really want a redtail. I don't really like the dwarf boas. Is it tough keeping a larger snake because maybe my parents wouldn't really mind? And will they really get as thick as your thigh because that is too big, and are there any smaller redtails that are around 6 or 7 feet. Sorry for all the questions but i would really like to get a redtail.

Thanks!

Well no, typically a RTB wont get as big around as your thigh...definately not my thigh. RTB's can be very well tempered snakes, there has never been a report of a Boa constrictor killing someone...IMO one of them reasons being that they have better eye sight which leads to better judgement on food and owner confusions(like some pythons). Sense i can tell your looking for something to stay a bit smaller...get a male, they can stay around 7'...be prepared for 8'.I dont know what size of food item a full grown male redtail would need, but i think you could get away with small rabbits just fine.

Id like to retract my state about them 'typically not getting as big around as your thigh' NO, i dont think at all theyd get that big around. and dont feed sparingly...that can be hard on the snake, feed the reccomended amount, feeding a snake less than what he should be fed all its life, or keeping temps lower to control the growth is NOT good for them
