using rat rack for mice

rudedogsurfrat Apr 09, 2004 06:08 PM

I was thinking about picking up a rodent rack here on this forum from ASL reptiles. The guy builds rat racks and mice racks both with water systems. I wanted to house my rats and mice in it but he doesn't make a unit that can hold both mice and rat tubs and he won't custom make one. So I was either going to buy a rat rack and put mice in it or buy a mouse rack and put rats in it. The problem with each idea is obvious. I just need some opinions.

I have kept both mouse and rats in cages much larger than necessary. It seems to keep odor down and I'd gladly do it again.

I suppose the biggest problem with either scenario is the size of the mesh or whatever covers the top of each tub. If it's 1/2" mesh for rats then "hopper" mice will escape. If it's smaller mesh for mice rats *may* have a hard time eating their food.

If this is a problem it's better to buy the rat cages and cover the existing mesh with something smaller.

Another concern is the depth of the mouse cages. Will they be too short for the rats to comfortable access their food and water sources? On the flip side, if the rat cages are too tall for mice you can simply add more substrate.

Hope this helps. I've delt with the same thing when I was building rodent racks.
