water problem with my crested, any help greatly appreciated

RedQuake Apr 09, 2004 07:13 PM

Hi,

Well out of my three cresteds Zeek insists on pooping in his/her water dish. I no sooner put in a clean bowl of water and bam, he poops in it. I mean i'm changing the water like 10 times a day if not more.

Will using one of the water dispensers like they use for hamsters or birds work???

I work so i'm not always able to change the water as much as its needed throughout the day....i dont' think he's drinking the dirty water, which is good, but it concerns me that if he's constantly making the water dirty he'll get dehydrated. I do mist his tank in the morning and evening.....is that enough???

Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Red

I would like to get away from misting as as much because it leaves horrible water marks on the glass. I have a dripper but the way it i set it up before i had it dripping into a bowl. I'd like to find a way to keep up the humidity levels that they need without the actual misting of the tank.......would a fogger be better?

Thanks for your input

Crickets will drown in the water and the geckos will make it their little cresty porto-potty.

Since I doubt "Gecko Poop Soup with Soggy, Dead Crickets" is something they should be allowed to drink.

I simply spray the cage every day. If I'm going to be gone longer than 24 hours, I will leave a bowl. This provides just enough humidity that they seem to have excellent sheds too.

Thanks for responding

I don't feed crickets but the CGD and the occational freshly molted mealworm. I understand that daily misting is Ok but it leaves horrible water marks on the glass and i've found that since they don't poop in one spot that the spraying waters down any poop thats there, making a large mess. I spot clean daily but it depends on what shift i'm on....if on days i clean in the evenings and if on evenings i clean in the morning. I do mist the tanks twice a day though.

The water bowl i have for my other two crested geckos doesn't get pooped in.....just the one. Speaking of the other two, Ziggy has her eyes fixed on the TV right now......rather funny, i wish i could get a pic of her watching TV LOL.

I just posted in responce to the other person and i've asked about a fogger or some other way to keep the humidity up without actually spraying and leaving water marks or leaving alot of water at the bottom of the tank (i use paper towels for substrate.

Any help is appreciated

Well, I don't keep mine in glass. Mine are all kept in rubbermaids. I have kept them on display before, but they were too messy.

If you're that worried about the glass, I would probably consider some kind of cage, so there's only the door to keep that clean. Maybe a Barrs cage would be good.

As for humidity, don't buy a fogger. They will do exactly that...create a dense, wet fog that will cause heavy condensation to form on the glass.

Hope that helps.

Anthony

Hi,

Thankyou for the info on the fogger....I'm not exactly sure what i'm going to do with these guys. The pair i got will be out of quarentine at the end of this month and i'd like to house them all together but Zeus is the only one i can tell for sure is male....the other two look female, plus if i keep Ziggy and Zeek together i won't know one from the other, they look so much the same lol.

I was thinking of getting each of them a Reptarium. I do need something that is secure, these little rascals are masters of escape.. I haven't heard of Barrs cages, but i'm doing to a reptile show next weekend so maybe there will be a supplier there.

We have hard water and even using a Britta water filter i've got stains on the glass that i'm having a heck of a time getting off.

How do you keep from losing geckos when using a rubbermaid? The picture is of Zeeks tank before i redid it. now the top screen with the door is at the side (i turned the tank) cause it was difficult reaching down to clean the bottom.

Thanks again
Red

If you want to avoid water spots on the glass just buy distilled water and spray with that. It's cheap enough and comes in big enough containers, just run a spray nozzel from the jug and it's easy.

You could try one of those waterfalls. The moving water will help with humidity and I also hear they will drink the splashed droplets. I don't know any way to keep such high humidity without spraying though...
