I have a leo problem?

anemone Apr 09, 2004 09:49 PM

I think something might be wrong with my leos. They seem to go a few days without eatting? I have 2 Leopard Geckos, both about around 5 months old. They seem to be getting along fine, I can't tell if they are female or male yet. I have them in a 15gal long tank with an uth that's usally around the upper 70s and at night lower 70s. I have many hiding spots, a water bowl(I do decholr), and I feed them every night. I dust Calcium twice a week. And I feed crix one week and mealies the next, and switch back and forth. I have always did this and they seem to eat about 5 every night. Well, last week one wouldn't eat for 3 days. And then one day he finally eat some mealies, and he ate like 6. Now last night the other geckos not eatting and he didn't tonight. They just walk around slowly licking stuff when it's feeding time. And they are drinking, I see them everyday. It seems they are slower than they used to be too. They used to run like crazy when I first got them as babys in that tank. When I get them out, they seem fine like always. It's just this eatting thing. Are they just getting older and don't need as much food or what?

Up the temps of the cage by getting a day bulb prolly like 50 or 60 watts. The day temps need to be around 88 and no higher than 90.

Hi

I agree with the other person that your basking end (warm end) of the tank is way to cool. Your basking end should be 88 degrees on that side and your cool end of the tank can stay that way. In that manner they can regulate there body temperature to warmer or colder as needed. That could be one big reason for there slow down in movement.

As they get bigger and older, there appetites will increase, not decrease. You should also keep a cap of straight calcium in there tank 24/7 for them to lick when they need extra. You should also keep dusting there food with calcium at every meal and some will tell you to dust there food with calcium that has D3 in it two to three times a week.

Another thought on something you said about there food and how one will eat better when you give them crickets and the other one seems to go for the mealworms, why don't you serve them both at there feedings for awhile and see how that works.

Take Care, TLB
