Lighting???

iggyluver Apr 09, 2004 11:12 PM

I recently dis-assembled my first vivarium because i wanted to get a larger tank and found a 40 gallon tall that is 24in tall, 30in long and 12 in deep, i was wondering if 2 normal output 24in flourescents and one 18in NO UVB light would be sufficient for growing neoregelias. If any neo's would thrive what are they? Also does anyone know of an easy way to grow live moss in i viv?

Thanx, Mark

Well lighting really depends. I assume you dont have CF since you didnt mention it, and im not sure what wattage they were. What kalvin rating are they? The best kalvin ratings for a viv are 5,000-10,000 kalvin.

Well for growing moss, Mine is growing right ontop of the substrate i got from T&C. For moss, from my experiance. All you have to do is keep it moist and A LOT of light on it. The areas in my tank that are shaded has patches of moss that are not as healthy as the areas in direct light. I have heard of people growing moss successfully on gravel.

no they are not PC's (power compactcts? right?) they are just cheap NO flourescents from manards, one is a 6500k. full spectrum and the other is cool white. as i already said the 18in one is a full spectrum UVB. Any advise on lighting a vivarium will be greatly apprieciated.

thanx, mark

Is it like kalvin and hobbs? hah, sorry. I know it has something to do with how much light is being produced, but how do i know what my bulbs have? I have a repti-sun 5.0 and it is for "rainforest terrariums" but says nothing about kalvins and all i hear on this site about lighting is kalvin this, kalvin that. When I go to the hardware store to find bulbs they say nothing about kalvin either. My frogs and plants have been doing fine so I don't know what the big deal is. Someone please explain
