Savanna Nasal Discharge?

SavageRN Apr 10, 2004 03:14 AM

I need some help! The pet store that I work at has the sibling to my baby savanna. It had some white flaky discharge caked around the nostrals. When I picked it up, the discharge flaked away. I did not see any meucus or labored breathing. It is very active and alert and eats like a garbage disposal. I am not sure if the discharge is natural or if it is a sign of a resp. Infection. The temperature in the cage is between 84-94 abient with a 105-115 basking. My personal savanna seems fine and does not have the same problem. What should I look for and what could be causing this.
Thanks

Monitors get rid of excess salt in their system through salt glands in their nasal cavities. It is secreted as a very salty fluid, but soon dries into a flaky white crust around the nostrils. It's possible that the monitor isn't getting enough humidity. Is it being kept in a tank with a screen top?

Thanks for the info. It is actually being kept in a side ventalated wood cage with a glass front. I know savs don't take too much humidity but I could add a dish of damp moss to see if that helps. I did not know they discharged salt through the nostrils. That helps to explain alot. Thanks so much!
