What is the cause of this mold?

Azureus_arrows Apr 10, 2004 01:18 PM

I'm just starting my first viv. Its a 20 gallon with false bottom and waterfall and everything looked great but when I woke up this morning the wood had white mold all over it.

Now the substrate, Eco Earth, along with the wood and rocks for the waterfall have been in the tank for about a week and a half. The plants I bought at a store and put in two days ago, and I just remembered I didnt pick one of the plants because it had little white spots, probably mold, on the soil. ARGH! Also I put a coconut hut in yesterday that I bought at Safeway and cleaned out. So how should I go about getting rid of this mold? Do I have to clean out my whole tank?

Mold is just a nousence. It wont harm a thing. I have never had mold that bad, but what little bit i get comes and goes. It always seems to die off and not be visible withen 3-4 days.

You could try to clean it up, but your attempt would likely be futile. With humidity that high its bound to come back.

I'v set up 4 tanks so far and I'v had this white mold or fungus on some of the wood in every one. You can't fight it, just let it run it's course. It's almost like "new tank syndrome" that you see in newly set up aquariums where you get algae/bacteria blooms. Eventually it will go away or get hidden by the other plants/moss in the tank.

If mold starts taking over everything in the tank and you start to get a rotten smell instead of a nice wet leaf smell, then you have a problem.

Good luck
