Question about my two corns...

LCGeckos Apr 10, 2004 03:29 PM

Okay, I have 2 brand new corn snakes. One is a hypo, the other albino. They are housed in a 20gallon Oceanic Lizard Lounge. The warm side of the tank has an ambient temp of 89 degrees during the day, with substrate temps of 78. Both of these beauties stay buried in the Zoo Med Forest Floor/Bed-A-Beast substrate that I'm using. There are above ground hides, but they both bolt underground. I've only had them for about 2 days.. will they eventually get used to coming out and visiting??

Jeff,

Since you have only had these snakes for 2 days, they will certainly need a few more to "settle in" and become comfortable with their new home. Corns do, however, spend a great deal of time hiding, especially during daylight hours. Some of mine will now tend to "peek" out of their hides when I am in the room...especially if feeding day is near. Sometimes they will be roaming about...but they like to come out when it is getting dark. They will come out MORE often once they settle in, but not a whole lot. Try checking on them around dusk when there is still enough light to see them, but it is starting to dim.

Think very seriously about getting a second cage. I am assuming your snakes are now small...right or wrong? Do you know the sexes? For many many reasons, your snakes will be better off eventually if each has its own cage. For now, if you do keep them together, take them out one at a time and feed them in a separate container. If there are ANY signs of trouble (regurgitation, refusal of food, one pestering the other, etc.)
...then get cage #2 ASAP. Best to do so before any potential trouble, though. Good luck with your new snakes. Corns are great. Scroll down through the posts below and check out lots of Q & A already posted. Lots to learn. Duffy

My corns used to hide all the time when I first got them. They are yearlings now and come out mostly at dusk. So give yours time and they should come out more often. Although I don't know how they will be housed together. Mine are in seperate 20 gallon tanks. Might want to think about housing yours seperate too. Just my opinion...
