Mealworm Colony

RAG66 Apr 10, 2004 05:21 PM

Just wondering if this sounds like a good idea
I jts got 1200 mealies and divided them among 2 28qt containers lined with wheat bran and potatoe slices for moisture. In the first I just have straight worms to grow and feed the second container contains pupa and some beetles. Is it necessary to seperate the pupa from the beetles and worms Ive heard so many different responses some say yes some say nay what yeild the best results

im hoping to get atleast 200 beetles and give them there own container can anyone venture a guess to how many worms they would produce?

I don't know about the beetles eatig the pupa ..but i do know that if there isn't enough moisture then the mealworms will eat the pupa expecially when in cramped areas.. that happened to a small container that i had moved some of my larger mealies to watch so i could feed them off .. BIG MISTAKE !!.. when they started to change the worms ate several of the pupa

Darkling beetle females lay between 500 to 1000 eggs, so if you have a 50/50 population of beetles and the beetles do not eat the eggs which they some times do they could lay between 50,000 to 100,000 eggs if not more.

*lol* if only darkling beetles could be sexed by color then you could tell more exactly how many eggs would be possible hehehe *G*
