How to raise mealworms- tips and techniques?

lucille Apr 10, 2004 05:31 PM

There is a company offering ten thousand mealworms for forty bucks on Ebay. I thought I would feed some and raise some. Anyone ever raise them and of so, how easy was it?

I buy 1,000 mealworms off the internet every once in a while for like 4 to 7 dollars. I place them in a plastic box about 2' X 16" X 7" tall with ventilation in the top. I use rolled oats in the bottom of the container about 3" deep. You should give them some fruit or something they can get moisture from occasionally, but it is not neccesary. I just leave them in the rolled oats and they eat this and eventually turn into beatles. The beatles lay eggs in the substrate and these turn into mealworms again. It's very simple and they perpetuate themselves with little or no help from you. Unless you are feeding a lot of beardies or other reptiles, I wouldn't suggest getting 10,000 though. All you need is a thousand or two, and when the colony starts too look thin you can just add another thousand for a few bucks.
