My First Beardie(s)

dchiboi Apr 10, 2004 05:52 PM

I am planning on getting a beardie, possibly a pair (male & female) I have been reading over some of the posts. Specifically in the area of diet. Of those here who have a pair or more, how many crickets do you (did you) feed your guys and gals? An employee at a local pet shop just had a clutch of 24 beardies. They are now about 1 month old.

Also please recommend your favorite cricket source. I considered purchasing them for this local place, but as prices tend to be a bit cheaper online I thought I would check it out and weigh the pros and cons and then make a decision.

Last thing, I had a few anoles in the past and a packman frog when in college a few years ago...I know my wife's biggest issue is the Great Escaping Cricket Sideshow. Any tips on keeping mass amouonts of them, and in what?

I buy my crickets from lllreptiles.com. My adult eats mostly salads, and about 20 large crickets a day, every other day or so. My young beardie eats about 60-80 small crickets a day.

If you get a male and female, keep them in seperate enclosures at all times. When they mature the male will harrass the female and breed with her a lot, stressing her out. Especially keep them seperate if they are from that clutch, you definately don't want them mating if they are siblings.

Good luck!

If you keep the crickets in a large rubbermaid container, they cannot climb up the sides, nor can they jump high enough to get out. I put old paper towel rolls and egg crate cartons in the container to give them places to hide so they don't stress out.

you should feed babies 3x a day 10 crickets a serving dusted crickets in the moring, juviniles you should feed once a day and also dusted crickets. Adults you should feed them 5-10 crickets every 2-3 days.

to keep a large number of crickets is to keep them in a big rubbermaid container.

please visit my website page on the cricket care and setup

I agree except with the babies and juvies feed them as much as they can eat in 10-15 minutes. You should not limit the number of crickets per feeding.
