crickets are a pain,,,wont roaches infest my house if they get out?,

sila Apr 10, 2004 06:06 PM

I bought a thousand pinheads and of course I never realized they would be sooo tiny so I had to wait till they were 1/4 in to feed to the bds and they dont seem to be lasting that long Im not so sure that I actually received 1000. Then they are a big pain to try and catch enough to use each day..I wonder if those cockroaches are easier to raise and just as good for the BD,s. What if a few escape, wont they infest my house? I grew up with mass amounts of cockroachs and the thought of them really gets my stomach all knotted up...My bds are too young for silkies so I guess the roaches will have to work.

Actually you can buy very small silkies or even better buy the eggs they are a lot cheaper. Hatch them out and use the small silkies to feed them. The one reason I have chose not to feed roaches to my Dragons is because my cages are not escape proof. I always have crickets running about. They say for every roach you see in your house there are 200 you don't see. They are a little to prolific for me to chance.

Wisely said. I live on the Texas Gulf Coast and we always have those big black roaches running into our garage at night and they are just nasty. I too have a cricket or two running loose at times but can live with that, the inside of my home has no roaches and I aim to see it stays that way.

I raise silks to feed to my dragons. I also give crickets occasionally, just for variety, but not many. They really love the silks. My mother would KILL me if I brought home roaches, they do have a nasty rap, even though I really don't see them much where I live. I am a little leary of them also being able to climb tank walls and such, and I would think that if they escaped, they may start their own colony in my house!

It depends on the type of roach you get. There are over 3000 types of roaches. Only about 30 of them are considered dirty and carry germs or diseace. Of the feeder roaches there are 3 types that are popular.
Hissers: they are get big and climb glass but move very slow.
Death Head: (several different varients) Medium-large in size, wings but does not fly, does not climb glass.
Lobster: (several varients) Small, climbs glass, wings but does not fly.

Death Head, Orange Head... are good starter roaches as they cannot climb glass. Raise them in a 10-20 gal tupperware. They are easity to raise. Feel free to contact me if you need more info

How many BDs are you feeding?
