Iguana problems

gmesumsgr Apr 10, 2004 06:49 PM

I just bought an iguana 4 weeks ago, and I took him to the reptile vet about 2 weeks ago and the vet said he looked healthy. For the last couple of days though Cabo hasn't been very active, he pretty much just sits in the same spot all day long. Today when I took him out, I put him back on his branch closer to the basking spot because he felt a little cool. When I put him down his legs staid up in mid air he didn't latch on the branch at all, its been 15 mintues and his legs are still in the same position (I posted a pic). I didn't know if this is normal or not. I checked the temps they are 95 and 80 on the cool side. I noticed he didn't eat alot today, in fact he hasn't been eating a whole lot lately, not like the first couple of weeks I had him. I just dont' know if I should take him back to the vet again. He did have a little burn on the end of his nose when I got him too and that doesn't seem to be healing either, can you put neosporin on that?

Hey hun You need to get a different reptile vet. This sounds a bit like MBD but im not sure. Could be some muscle issues as well. When you had him were his legs able to move freely? Are they stiff and fixed or flexible?

you did not mention if you had a UVB source. I recommend a
Reptisum 5.0 or Iguana light 5.0. My baby adopted ig was a
product of Petco and he had MBD at 4 months.

My vet jumped right on it and immobilized his broken leg
and then told me to give a new UVB light and add 1/4 crushed
fruit flavored Tums to his food each day. Mix it up well
so he cannot taste it. Make sure you give a diet rich in
calcium as well, mustard, turnip etc.

Digit shows no signs of MBD now. I would also recommend
another vet. I question if this one is familiar with igs.

Keep up posted. PS, here is a pic of Digit at 6 months old

Well I went back to check on him a little later and he finally put his legs down. Its not that he has a problem moving at all he just doesn't seem to be real lively in the cage. When I take him out, he does his normal thing of trying to escape so I know all of his limbs are functioning properly. I do have a UVB bulb on his tank. In his diet I have kale, mustard greens, collard greens, banannas, carrots, squash, green beans, peas and raspberries, I mix it up between everything every day so its different and I use the calcium plus vitamin d supplement. The vet that I took him to was very highly reccomended, here in the county I live in, not one vet takes reptiles, so I had to drive about an hour to get there. But he specialitizes in reptiles and he really gave me a lot of good advice, at that point in time Cabo was very active too. Unfortunately I wasn't home alot today becuase of the holiday, but he ate very well, so I am just gonna keep a close eye on him the next couple of days.......
