Digging/egg laying

speedracerbecki Apr 11, 2004 01:59 AM

My female veiled cham has been acting kind of wierd lately (pacing the perimeter of the cage, not eating for 2 day and she's NEVER refused a cricket...) So, I decided to make a sandbox for her to dig in, and maybe lay eggs (I suspect she needs too, but I don't know for sure, they would be infertile if she does). I bought play sand and gave her a bucked with about 9 inches of wet sand. She's been digging in it for about 10 hours! It's way past lights out time and she's still going! Do I just leave her alone or should I take the bucket out for the night? Thank you very much for any advice, this is all new to me!

just leave her alone and let her do her thing. Hopefully you packed the sand tightly so it holds its shape and does not collapse on her. I mix sand and coco-fiber (eco-earth, bed-a-beast, etc.) Don't remove the bucket. keep us posted

Thanks for the response! I packed it pretty tight, my worry is that it will dry out and collapse, or that it's not deep enough for her liking. She is STILL digging super slowly at the bottom of the bucket! Thanks again, I will definetly keep you posted

I've had females dig down 12 - 14 inches and then start working their way around the edge of the bottom. Seems like forever. I've noticed this mostly with "first timers", older females seem to just want it over with so they can get back to basking. Like Lele said, just give her time.

Yeah! That's what she did, she dug down and then started going around the bucket's bottom, VERY interesting to watch!

She's done! I came home just now and the hole is filled in and she is currently pulling every leaf and vine she can reach into the bucket. When can I take the bucket out and check it out? Should I just wait until she leaves it alone?
