WTF with extra digit?

samster Apr 11, 2004 03:43 AM

Hello everyone. My WTF Bendito that I adopted from a research lab, and nursed back to health is doing great, except for one little abnormality. In the area where his skin was eaten and raw from crickets, the skin healed over well, but now it appears that he is developing an extra toe. It has slowly been growing larger, and is still fairly small, but it doesn't look any different (color/texture) from his other digits. Does anyone know anything about this? He still eats great, and looks otherwise perfect. Please let me know. Gracias!

When animals are polydactyl (more than the normal amount of digits) its typically due to one of two causes. 1. is a genetic abnormality (we see this often in frogs that come from polluted ponds) this abnormality can be natural or caused by something affecting the animal during its fetal or larval development. 2. is when an animal loses a limb partially and regenerates a full new one next to it (we see this in skinks that break their tales and grow a second one). Unfortunately it sounds like neither of these casues apply in your case. It could possibly be a tumor or infection mimicing a new digit. Plus you mentioned that you resuced the animal from a research lab. was he exposed to anything unnatural?

No, he wasn't exposed to anything. He was actually never even used for anything, but was waiting to be used. He was purchased as a captive bred healthy fellow, but due to husbandry issues, was not healthy anymore. He completely recovered, and this little digit is slowly growing. It does not look like a tumor or infection, though this could be a possiblity. The spot where the digit is growing was a very deep wound from crickets and infection, so what I am wondering is if the body was "tricked" into thinking a toe was amputated just becasue the wound was so deep. Let me know.

Could he have had the extra toe before you got him? you would have never known untill it started to grow back right? I'd love to see pic of your frog, it sounds very intresting!

How do I go about posting a picture? I have never done that before. Thanks!!

I think this should work to see a pic. Unfortunately you cannot see the extra toe because it is on the inside of his foot. Sorry. If I can get one though, I will definately post it!
