Where can I find a 3 foot light/fixture???

pernads Apr 11, 2004 09:50 AM

I already have two 18" UVB lights, and I read on a few care sheets to use a Philips TL950 flouresence tube, or any high quality plant light. I think my cage needs a little more light, so I want to add 1 single 36" flouresence bulb. I cant find a 3' fixture around here, and the TL950 is a color for a bulb, and not a model number. Could anyone suggest a good light and where i can get a reflective fixture, that has a cover so no water can touch the bulb.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,

Home Depot and Lowes (and even Walmart and Kmart) have light fixtures with plastic covers built in (I think they are designed for under-cabinet use) that range in size from 18" to 48". You can use a regular plant bulb in these as they are single bulb design. Home Depot's brand is by GE and they call it an "aquarium/plant light". You dont need to buy the aquarium specific one as they regular unit is the same with a different bulb. You can buy a grow-light from the same place to use in place of the regular bulb.

Hope this helps.

Here is a link to the lowes item so you can see what the lights look like. In case the link doesnt work, try lowes.com and search the lighting section for this:

I would watch out using those plastic guards you are talking about. Plastics and glass filter out UV rays...Which is what the chams need the lights for. If you're worried about the bulbs getting wet, either place them away from the water source..Or suspend them so that they aren't touching the cage. I have a 4' light fixture with a repti-sun and a grow light bulb suspended from the ceiling over my cages and it works great..Never gets in the way.
Hope this helps,
Cory

Thanks for the tips.

As for the plastic guard, I already have two 18" 7.0% UVB bulbs. I just wanted to get a fixture/bulb that was beneficial to the plants, yet not harmful for my cham. My cage is 4x4x2.5, and the UVB and heat lamps aren't filling the cage with light. I also have a 75w Day bulb for his primary basking spot in the upper right.
