Question about South Carolinas laws -

ravenspirit Apr 11, 2004 04:04 PM

I am contemplating a move to SC, and was curious what thier herp laws, particularly those regarding crocodilians, specifically about spectacled caiman, and private ownership of an american alligator, seeing as they are native there.

My alligator (osceola) is microchipped, and I was wondering if anyone had any experiance with the laws/possable permits there, particularly because I would be continueing to run an educational buisness ? Would I have to get an alligator farming permit, and liscance, or are there other permits avalable ?

We are looking at farms, and places in rural type areas with a minimum of one acre, zoned for horses and livestock.

Thanks for any help in advance

As a member of the South Carolina State Animal Advisory Review Board and state resident as well it is my pleasure to inform you that South Carolina is very progressive concerning herps. We have a few species of concern and you must have a no cost permit for keeping spotted turtles. Additionally no state permit is needed for venomous keeping at this time . Currently there are no state laws barring the possession of caimen as long as no federal laws are broken by possession/transport...As an indigenous species however the american alligator is protected and its possession is not allowed as a pet or to the general public. Currenly permits for alligator possession/display can be obtained by qualified AZA and educational facilities from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources...
