Red Tail vs. Common boas..

burninman921 Apr 11, 2004 04:17 PM

How does one tell the difference between a "real" red-tail (ie, boa constrictor constrictor) and a common boa (boa constrictor imperator)?

One of my local dealers has a "Columbian red tail" which I'm guessing is really a b.c.i...

It is hard to tell, but generally the price is much higher for a BCC versus a BCI. What is he asking for it?

Around $150. Nice snake; very docile for a baby. The baby carpet python they have is VERY "nippy"! Cute little guy, though...

I would agree with you. It is probably a BCI

Generally pet stores are going to carry Bci - either Columbians or Central Americans. FWIW, a Columbian redtail IS a common boa. Since they technically DO have a red tail, the name has pretty much stuck to it and Columbian redtail is how most people state that their animals are Bci. From what I have seen, the 'true' redtails (Bcc - Surinam, Guyana, Peruvian, etc.) are typically brighter in color and have a crisper patterns. Of course, there are exceptions to all the rules with these guys and you can find very 'clean' and bright Bci.
