hey, The smallest hatchling is the 3-striped mud turtle, they also only et to around three inches when they are older, There are other mud speciees that are also this small, such as the eastern mud and the mississippi mud, they are not expensive turtles, fell free to ask me some questions

There's actually quite a few small hatchlings...normally the muds and musks fall into that category though.

It's interesting how striped muds get only 3 inches. And my breeders are all 3.9-4.5". I wonder how that can be.

OOOHH, i am so sorry let me correct myelf "mr. perfect" they get around 4 inches, but most of the time when they come from the wild you will get them around 3 inches expecially in southern florida, I did not mean to offend you when i said three inches

i'm not new to aquati turtles but im wondering if the 3 stripped or any other mud, musk turtle is easy to care for?just wondering.

MudMuskKev Apr 12, 2004 02:36 PM

They are very wasy to take care of, they are great begginer turtles, They dont not need big tanks when the are older and feed on basically anything, they are such pigs

Actually most WC adults are around 4 inches as well. Saying a turtle gets smaller than they actually do is called misrepresenting. You can get into trouble doing that in the real world. Also I wouldn't go around calling people names as that can back fire on you really quickly.

..... why you gettin all defensive? just a frendly conversation here. bog turtles are usualy smaller but arent sold as pets very often. speckled cape padloper tortoise is the smallest of all, around 2", but cant be kept as a pet. dies without native forage plants. just some more little turts and torts to think about
smallest turtle, questions ansered, w/more links

snappy Apr 13, 2004 01:35 PM

yeah i was looking at bog turtles and saw that they are endangered....anyone know if they are really hard to find as babies in the wild seeing they're not sold and i dont want an adult(and they're prob. ahrd to find anyway)

MudMuskKev Apr 13, 2004 03:21 PM

I would not really try to catch one seeing that they are starting to get pretty limited in the wild,

I am not trying to get affended, just it is pretty rediculous that someone is correcting me for being of by an inch, lol

Anyway back to the turtles, what sate do you live in becasue depending on where you live the turtles will be different.

i live in NJ..was looking for a good turtle to get as a pet..i already have 2 RES and 2 painters

snappy Apr 13, 2004 10:55 PM

i was thinking of gettin a snapper(common or alli) but wanted to see what other turtles i should get.

MudMuskKev Apr 14, 2004 05:17 PM

you can get a snapper if you are ready to get bigger tanks as they grow, or put it in a pond when it gets older, musk turtles are good room mates with sliders and painteds, do som investigation noline and find the best musk turtles for you, mud turtles are good also they are also good roomates with sliders, and they bask more than musk turtles do.

I had a three striped male for a couple weeks and in that early time it took the head off of a yellow belly that was larger than it.....just somethin to think about.

You aren't saying that you would consider taking a bog turtle - of any size - from the wild, are you? That is wrong on SO many levels. Highly unethical, and equally illegal. There are occasional CB bogs for sale, although you would want to determine if they are even legal to own in your state.
