What do use as substrate for your box turtles? How deep should it be?

My Box turtles live outside. So they cover themselves in soil all the time! What kind of box turtle do have or are thinking of getting?

A good topsoil/sand mix, cypress bark mulch (no other bark mulches are good), or just plain loamy soil. You can also use commercial products like bed-a-beast (ground up coconut shells).

3-4 inches deep is good, they love to bury themselves.

Why does no other bark mulch work? I went to the hardware store looking for mulch and all they had was "western hard wood" mulch so i bought that. Why would cypress mulch be the only mulch that works?

Some woods (mulches) have oils that can be toxic to reptiles.

those oils are in pine and cedar mulches.

I use hardwood mulch (also the cheapest mulch) by the truckload in my outdoor pens.

Thanks, I knew some where bad since they have oils but i thought i would check again since he said no other bark was ok to use.

A mixture of topsoil and peat moss works just fine for me.
