Praying Mantis?

stevie16 Apr 11, 2004 10:11 PM

I was at home depot today and I say a praying mantis egg case for sale so I bought one. The directions only say that the eggs hatch in three weeks. I was how to care for them till they get to a size that I can feed to my chameleons. I have fruit flies and crickets availble when they hatch. Is there any other things that I should do or be aware of?
Thanks
Stevie

Congrats on getting some mantis! Chameleons love them! At least mine does. Anyway, a few tips: Keep the humidity up in the container with the egg case. About 40-60% is good. Keep in mind anywhere between 50-200 mantis will hatch out. A 10 gallon tank is about the smallest I'd suggest. Make sure to have a fine mesh top on it, when they hatch out they are tiny and can squeeze thru most screen tops like nutin. After hatching, if you can get someone to assist you, I suggest trying to put them into indiviual cups. Large plastic ones with either a napkin or old pantyhose on top works super. Drop in about 2-4 fruit flies or pin heads a day. I've noticed that they really love fruit flies. Lightly mist the cups once a day to give them water and keep humidity up. They should shed about once a week for the first month or so. Humidity is very importent in shedding. On thing you want to watch out for is getting attached to them. lol They are super neat. I kept one as a pet and he's scary big now. Eats full grown crickets. Hope that helps!
