Lethargic female frilly?????

CJFT Apr 11, 2004 10:52 PM

Hey all, I have a serious question and need your opinion on this matter. For the last few months my female frilly has pretty much gone down hill, she has virtually stopped eating and is very skinny. When she arrived at my house a year ago she was fine other than the fact that their where about 3 shed's still stuck to her body, with the right humidity and misting that old skin fell off and she looked awesome, and as healthy as ever. For about 6 months she would cruise around here cage, check out the sites and eat like crazy. Then about 6 months later she just stopped eating and most of the time I will find her hiding in the corner of the cage a little cold to the touch, burried in the substrate?? Her cage is 4'x3'x4' with a 100 watt trex vapor bulb on one side, 100 watt flood/heat bulb on the other and inside the cage is a 24" repti-sun. The humidity is kept at 60-70% at all times and she is misted once a day with water available at all times. She is also housed with a male frilly about 4-5"'s bigger than her. They both have plenty of branches to climb on so territory is not a problem. Sorry about the book I wrote and thanks for checking this out to the end!!! Let me know what could be causing this. I also treated her with panicure and a month later treated her with albon, proper dosage of course on both med's, thinking it may be parisites.

Thanks

Hi again I messed up, she has been like this for about 3 months not 6 months like I said in the thread.

She will also drink water when I hold her and spray the water on the mouth area, this way I know she's drinking.

my guess would be that she does not like being with the male. You should seprate them at least untill she is doing better and has gained some more weight. You should also take a fecal sample to the vet to rule out parisites.

I really strongly advise against medicating an animal without doing a fecal exam--especially albon. A lot of these meds are very harsh and can really strip the system and do permanent damage. I believe they should only be administered if a fecal exam is positive (and there is a large number of parasites) and if the animal is showing negative symptoms. And, administer with food, water and probiotics. If she had not eaten in awhile and was dosed with meds that can be a recipe for disaster.

I'd agree with everyone to separate her and start babying her--probiotics and babyfood until you get her eating and active again. I would not do another round of meds until she shows some improvement--and only then after a fecal.

Best of luck
Dana

Thanks for the tip on the parasites, i thought the same thing and treated her for them more than a month ago. As for her being with the male, i'm going to put her up in a 55 gallon to see if her condition gets any better. The thing I don't understand is she was doing fine with him in the same cage for many, many months, both eating well and the male showing no signs of aggression towards her. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

he's probably displaying dominance and/or even trying to breed her when you're not around. When my frilleds were around 15", the male started trying to breed the female (even at that young of an age)... at that time my female was an inch or two longer than the male.

I separated them as soon as I noticed. You wouldn't necessarily catch the male being aggressive as he would probably do it when you're not around. Females shouldn't be housed with males until they're full grown adults... not sure if yours is or not. Good idea to check for parasites as well.

I seperated her from the male yesterday, as for the baby food I'll give it a go. Thanks for all the help and I'll keep you posted on her condition.
