POISONED?

WOLFINMAYERHOFER Apr 12, 2004 03:34 AM

HI... Am I being paranoid, or is there a chance that my ball python sniffed a "bad box"? I put him in a store display for playtime. This was a white box in which the place where I work had shown "gift tissues", the white paper in which one wraps gifts at Christmastime. The snake was fine and moving around, but he kept sniffing at the box. After about fifteen minutes, he seemed to stiffen up. He was still under the box, which had an opening, but kept his nose out, as if for air, and kept sniffing with his tongue. I thought that it was cute and took a picture, but, when he didn't move, I started to worry, and took away the box. He kept still on his towel, until I panicked and moved him into his water bowl. Then he moved around a little. I put him back, and checked on him. He's under the cardboard in his aquarium, on his green cloth, but not under his newspaper. (A clean, safe, cardboard.) He's breathing - I think that it's normal. It could be fast, but, I'm too worried to trust my judgment. Again, this was not a box which ever contained detergents nor other chemicals. But, when I smelled it hard, after I'd put the bp away, it seemed like my chest burned. Again, I don't trust my own judgment, because I have reflux disease, and that makes my chest burn anyway. What if the manufacturer of the tissue sprayed the box to keep away pests?

I called the poison control center, but they don't know anything about snakes.

For what symptoms should I watch? This could be all in my mind, or, I could have a poisoned animal. How likely is this? When do I act? Please help!

Honestly it seems like you're overreacting a lot. I understand how you can be a bit paranoid about a situation like this but it sounds like to me like your brain is in much worse shape than your snake. That's not meant to sound as bad as it does. What I mean is that I think you've convinced yourself there's a much bigger problem than there really is.

Just calm down and wait a little while to see if the snake has any problems. You have to learn to take problems such as this with a level headed mind. If you continue to panick you may very well cause your snake more harm than it was in in the first place.

Stop, take a deep breath. Focus on the animal and not the fear you have of there being a problem or what might happen.

I think your snake is going to be just fine.

Hi,

I understand your freaking out about your snake. I overreact about my animals when they start acting different. I'm no expert, and a new BP owner...but I think there's nothing in that display box that would hurt your snake. Certainly no poison or pesticides! Even if someone used a cleaner on it (and they probably didn't), it would probably not hurt your snake. I use all sorts of "recycled" stuff for my snake and other animals. Just take a breath (not too deep if you have reflux!) and believe your snake will be OK. You certainly didn't do anything unusual or evil!
