Better really depends on the rest of the room. If the room they're in is kept warm, then back heat is okay, but they would prefer bottom heat. I used a strip of tape on the back on my rack, so one end of the boxes would be heated, but I did notice most of them would curl up in that corner of the box, and I think they would have liked it better if I had heated each one underneath rather than on the back or the rack.

Just my opinion, but I think belly heat is better, but if the room's regular temp is warm, like 74 F, then back is okay too. Also, one strip down the back was really easy to wire up

I have four racks, three have 10, 28qt.& the other holds 20, 28qt. There all heated down the back with 11" heat tape. This works best in my opinion for a rack set up. All my Neodesha cages are heated on the bottom.

I used one strip of 11" felx watt down the back of my adult rack and because the boxes don't actually go all the way to the back of the rack, in the hatchling rack, I used two 11" strips down the back of it.
I have them on a thermostats and have the temperature probes in off the back of the racks a couple of inches to make sure they truly stay warm enough.
