Albert...

girliegirl Apr 12, 2004 10:46 AM

Well, I had to put Albert down Thursday. The poor thing just had too many problems. His eyes were infected and the treatment didn't work, his leg and foot got reinfected and ended up being a fracture (vet wanted to amputate for $400+), he recently got 6 cysts on the outside of his body (no telling how many were in his little body)...the list goes on and on. I felt I couldn't be selfish and only think of myself and my feelings anymore, I had to think of how Albert was feeling. So I had the vet do it peacefully. I felt so bad for him but I know he is in lizard heaven and very happy.

I just wanted to thank you all for all the help and advice you have given me over the past 8 or so months. You are all treasures.

Thank You,
Carrie

PS So some of you don't think I did this to him or think I let him get this bad, I got him from a pet store last May when he was all skin and bones. They had been starving him, so I took him home.

care you gave him, and turned him around from an emachiated sickly guy into a handsome fellow!

Hey sometimes things happen. I guess when you get them from a petshop they usally dont know where they came from or what kind of care they got.

From his looks when you fist posted last year, he looked pretty sad.

Your next photos after working with him, he looked like a different lizard. But I do remember Albert was always battling a new infection, feet, so on .

Again, real sorry, you did a wonderful job , and hes in great hands, so thats a good thing kid.

Take care,

Thank you very much. I loved him and will miss him but like you said...hes in great hands. I still haven't found that "special" spot in the back yard for him yet. My husband thinks I'm nuts for leaving him in the freezer until I do find the spot. :P

Again, thanks for the compliments eve.

Carrie...didn't that lizard get some weird probelm with one of its rear legs too. I was on a website a few days ago and remember seeing a young lizard that looked similar to yours, and it got a nasty open wound on the rear leg. It healed nicely, and the lizard looked great...was that your photo?

Sorry to hear about the lizard...those eye infections (any infections really) can be downright nasty.

...but you never know. It did heal well, just a little scar. The foot got re infected last month. This time the skin didn't split on the leg, so I gave him another dose of the meds from the vet. It didn't heal this time, and then the eye got infected at the same time. Here's a pic of the leg wound...to see if it's the same one, eventhough I do have different ones.

Thanks for the kind words JohnE.

You have a large beardie too? I think I remember seeing a pic of the lizard gazing into a bearded dragon tank. I was going to send you an e-mail at the time, but couldn't find your address on your page for the life of me.

Believe it or not, I found your pic by doing an image search on google for "swollen leg."

that you found the pic that way. And yes to the first question. I let albert run and he decided to try and get in Herbie's tank until he noticed him in there. Thought better of that (I would too LOL).

hey
i had never heard your story until today and i definitely don't think you did anything wrong. you loved him and tried to help him and sometimes helping him is making that tough decision to let them go to a better place.

Thanks, I think I'm used to the beardie forum where they flame you when they don't know all the facts (they have calmed some lately tho). Yea, that was definitely difficult. Not something I want to do again for a long, long time. I'm praying the rest of my reptiles don't have any problems for a while.

Thanks,
Carrie

PS Here's Albert when I first brought him home. His tail was as thin as a piece of paper.

oh my god, did you turn that pet store in to the aspca? i would have. thank god you came along to make his life happier. and let your husband think you are nuts. i had to keep my lizard in the fridge until his vet appointment (i was getting an autopsy done)and it took me an hour to do so because everytime i went to open the door i started crying uncontrolably. it is funny how a creature so tiny can make you so darn sad.
