All Dead!!! Why did this happen

anolewatcher Apr 12, 2004 11:27 AM

please excuse the long message, but I'm in shock!
I have a 30 gallon tank. I have the proper UVA/UVB. I also have a daytime heat bulb, and one of those red bulbs for nightime. I mist their tank 3 times a day. Yesterday about 4pm they were all moving around. This morning I went to turn on their lights, and I always watch them for awhile. They were all Dead!! Their are 1 male and two females. They all got along fine, did not fight. They are all in separate areas, and all of them died with their eyes open. The only changes I have made in the last 3 days are these:
1. I cut a hole out of the top of the lid, and cut a piece of window screen to cover the hole. I did this so that I did not have to remove the whole lid to feed them.
2. I took some flexible aluminum mesh screen and rolled it and bended it to make fake branches. But I also have some wood branches and plastic plants. I just did this to give them more to climb on.
3. I had been getting my crickets from the pet store, but they only had the bigger ones. I read that anoles food should not be bigger than their head. So I ordered 1/4 inch crickets off of the internet. I fed the crickets Flukers cricket feed and the gel water. I gave my anoles about 10 of these small crickets per day.

What on earth could have caused them to all die suddenly. They were not lethargic that I noticed. And it would be different if they died one at a time, but all 3? Just 2 days ago they were even mating! And I thought they if they were mating then they must be comfortable in their environment.

Please help me figure out what could have happened

Sounds like you inadvertantly introduced a toxin into the environment. I would suspect the bent screen (there might have been something on it) or the crickets. It is possible (though not likely) that the crickets might have had some insecticide residue on them. The most likely culprit is the screen material.
