Question about Mealworms as stapel diet?....

mmfrankford Apr 12, 2004 12:16 PM

Hello everyone. This is the first time on this particular forum. Most of my experience has been with corn snakes. I just recently adopted a leo from my aunt. She is eating well.
Ok my question is this. I have been doing research for a while on feeder insects for leos. Good lord it's all different. One says only crickets. Another says they feed there leos only mealworms and they do great.(From a breeders site) I've heard that mealworms can be hard to digest because of the chitin.
My adopted geckos has greedily eaten both crickets and mealworms. I also plan on supplementing with field insects
later in the summer.(Clean unsprayed field nearby )
And to tell you the truth I would prefer to deal with mealworms. Thanks for reading.

Stale bread and water anyone? Just kidding.

Actually, as long as you gut load your meal worms, and dust with calcium, they can be a staple diet for most any reptile. Just make sure you are feeding nutritious ingredients to your mealworms.

OK that is what I was hoping to hear. I have the mealworms in a substrate of Flukers Cricket Feed(High Calcium Version) with fresh potato for moisture. I did notice a few of the worms are in the pupae stage. Oh and one thing I do like about this leo, if ti moves she'll munch it. Know if my corn snake would be like that.
