snake cage help

throatoyster Apr 12, 2004 02:26 PM

ok here's the deal... I'm building a large snake enclosure that will consist of 6 separate cages (cabinet style out of melamine- that plastic coated mdf). I've got everything figured out except for what type of glass to use on the front for the openings of the cages. What do all of your cages have (anyone who wants to answer)? If I use plexiglass, it will be easy to put the hinges on and i pretty much don't have to worry about breaking it so much, but that stuff scratches just from wiping it off. If I build a sort of frame and use normal glass I'm afraid it'd be to fragile. I'd like to use tempered glass, but I wouldn't know how to put the hinges on it, or where to get at the sizes I need at an affordable price (largest pieces would be 36" x 18"
Any suggestions? Ideas? Please help!!!
thanks!

If you use glass, you can put hinges on it by using adhesive, or by having the glass drilled with a diamond bit. You might take it somewhere to get the holes drilled....

What about those hinges that are used to hold the glass doors on an entertainment cabinet. They have set screws that tighten down on the glass. That way you would not have to drill any holes in the glass.

Putting hinges on glass would be easy. Just mount the glass in a frame, and attack the hinges to the wood/mdf/melamine frame that you constructed around the glass.
