Anyone use a Hova-Bator with the fan?

gregd Apr 12, 2004 02:27 PM

I have heard the fan will dry out the eggs. I do have the one without the fan, but was thinking of getting the expansion ring, which would allow more space to stack the containers on top of each other in the incubator. However, the expansion ring not recommended with the still air model because the temperature difference will be too great from the top to bottom of the incubator. So I was thinking about installing the fan kit, but was concerned with the fan drying out the eggs...(SIGH). So, does anyone use the one with the fan without any problems? I figure I could just make sure the vermiculite is always moist and the thermoflo reservoir is always filled. What do you expert breeders think. Advise/comments/critisism/feedback is always appriciated. Thanks.

fans are needed more in larger incubators to circulate the moist air. You definately need to keep an eye on humidity with fans. My incubator is 6'x4'x2' so I run 4 fans to keep the air moving and keep the humidity even.

Greg,
I bought one to use with my leopard gecko eggs, and didn't like it. I eventually snipped the wires to the fan and took it out of the circuit.Where can you get this expansion ring you speak of?

Hey Bill,

This link takes you to a chicken supply site that carries the expansion rings and all other parts you may ever need.

Were you unable to get it to the right temps with the fan? Thanks.

The problem with the fan model is not it drying out the eggs. The problem is that they are perfect for bird eggs that need temps up in the high 90's. You can not get a forced air hovabator to run low enough for BD eggs.

I don't know about that.... I used the forced air hovabators back when I bred cockatiels. I just know that it wouldn't adjust low enough for BD's so I ended up cutting the fan wires. I have since made my own incubator out of an old freezer and use that same hovabator fan to circulate the air in there

You recommended the Ranco ETC. I received it last Friday and it's been working great so far. Thanks for your reply.
