Woohoo! First snake

the nerve Jun 13, 2003 07:56 PM

I got my first snake ever today... a baby albino black ratsnake. She is also het for patternless. She's not too big right now, they said she was 8 months old but she's not much longer than 12-15 inches (haven't measured her yet though). I would post a picture but I don't have my digital camera right now, but I'll post one as soon as I get them!

I have her in a 10 gallon tank with aspen bedding. Temps are 85/75. She has two hiding spots and a water dish.

I'm super excited, I've kept a bearded dragon and leopard gecko before but never a snake.

Here is a picture of another albino black rat, this one isn't mine though. However I got my snake from the same place as this picture...

this hobby. Nice choice for a first snake. Here's a pic of my lavender albino black rat snake a few weeks after he hatched that Dwight Good produced. Most people opt for corns and then go into rat snakes. I say go right for rat snakes. IMHO. Sounds like you have her set up good so you did some or already knew about caring for the snake. I wouldn't handle her too much yet or feed her for a week. Let her get used to her new home. She's probably stressed from moving to your place and not being in familiar surroundings. Feed her something small (pinkie) in a week and then leave her alone for a few days. If she eats and does well, let the person you got her from know that she has eaten. Let them know if she doesn't eat. Feeding her somethng small and leaving her alone will help keep her from regurging. Do this for a few feedings, then she should be O.K. Don't let all your friends hold her for several weeks. Don't pull her out everytime someone drops by to see your new snake. Try to please your snake first and your friends later for now. Good luck with her Andy and don't hesitate to post or ask questions on this forum.

Nice snake! Looks a lot like mine, except mine is a bit bigger and lighter colored.

So far I have resisted the urge to handle my snake, lol. I'm going to offer her a pinky tommorrow, then I'm going to wait a day or two before I try to handle her. She's a super cool snake. She doesn't even use the hide boxes I provided, she'd much rather just burrow in the aspen bedding, lol. That's what she had at the East Bay Vivarium (the place I got her from).

Finally got some pics:

...going into the aquarium? I wouldn't want it crawling on the cord. You could put something a little taller in there for crawling on or for basking. Just my 2 cents. Welcome to the hobby

That's my digital thermometer. Since I noticed that she likes to climb, I put in a fake plant that she loves climbing on.
