Taming my beardie.

solfinger Apr 12, 2004 05:11 PM

I have a beautiful beardie that I adopted from a friend about 3 months ago. She's about a year old and was not handled much at all prior to living with me. I am able to handle her on a daily basis but some days are better then others. For example, she was fine yesterday, for the most part, but then today she bit me right as I took her out of the cage. I've been bitten by her several times as she's kind of unpredictable. Will she always be this way? Any suggestions?

When you take her out try and give her her favorite food.

When you are taking her out, are you coming at her from above? If she is in a tank and your reaching down towards her, that could scare her. It is better to approach from her level and slightly from the front of her. If she is letting you handle her one day and then not the next, I would say she is doing pretty good and will eventually adjust just fine.

Good luck with her.

Yes, her tank is set up on a low stand so I'm always approaching her from above. She doesn't freak out until she is actually picked up though. She never runs from me, she just sometimes goes nuts in my hand. Actually, she has eaten out of my hand before, but she still has a few bad moments. I'll keep trying! I think she'd be better had my friend actually cared about her.

by a PREDATOR, and eaten, so you can just imagine how frightning it is to see your hand come from above !

Always approach lizards from the front, or side even, at their level, or lower. So they can see you coming.

They will be much less stressed.

If you continure to handle each day she should be fine.

Be patient ! It will happen !
