Quarentine question

Rottenweiler9 Jun 13, 2003 07:56 PM

Is two months long enough to quarentine a snake, or should it be the 3 months before you introduce it to the rest of the collection. Also if you get one from a reputable breeder do you even need to quarentine.

Regardless of where the snake comes from or what the supposed history of it is, always quarantine them. Some people only quarantine for 30 days. I always quarantine for a period of no less than 90 days. Regardless of what breeder the snakes come from. I do run several different stages of quarantine for different catagories of snakes though. "General quarantine" is for every boid that appears well. At 30 days (or so) if they show no signs of being less than healthy they will then be bumped up into "Shallow quarantine", which is a less stringent quarantine and also places them out of the vicinity of any new arivals in General Q. After an additional 60 days or so they are then entered into the colony that their genre dictates. Even then, like every snake they have their own cage, their own water bowl, and their own soak tub. Lastly is "Deep quarantine" which is specifically for snakes that I KNOW are ill and need special treatment or care until they can even be entered into the 90 day general quarantine stages. This "deep" quarantine is set way away from all of the healthy snakes. I might have 1 or 2 snakes per year come in and end up in that catagory at best. And even after they go through a complete quarantine they are never entered into a closed colony. Snakes that were once in DQ go into a seperate room with other 'questionable' breeders. I hope this helps in some small way.

Although my Quarintine is far from as "advanced" as Brian's, I seperate *all* animals that come in from my collection. Doesn't matter where they come from or how healthy they look.

The point is. You NEVER Know what deadly disease (to you or your other herps) this snake may carry with it.
