Newbie with geckos

bobster6060 Apr 12, 2004 05:57 PM

i just recently got a house gecko. I have hiding spots and branchs for it to climb on. I mist the cage in morning and early evening and also include a small water dish for it. The crickets i have are on flukers calcium cricket feed. The only problem i have is feeding the gecko. MY question is, are you suppose to actually feed the cricket to the gecko by picking the gecko up and giving him the cricket, or are u suppose to just put them in his cage(10 gallon). I dont want him to die and i dont know if he is eating the crickets in there. Please someoen reply to this and give me all the information you can on raising my house gecko.

Thx
Bob

Hi

No, you don't have to pick up the gecko to feed it. Yes, you can just put some crickets in the tank for him to eat. If you want to find out if he is eating, take out all the crickets in the tank, and then before you put some back in, count how many you are putting in the tank first, then the next day you can count how many are left.

Make sure you have a lid on the tank, so your gecko nor the crickets can get out.

These geckos live basically off of the ground, on the sides of your tank etc.. In the wild you can see them on the sides of houses, up trees and so on, so provide plenty of climbing room.

These geckos are not known for there handleability, mostly because they are so fast and hard to hang onto.

Make sure you are coating the crickets with calcium before feeding them out. You will also want to keep a heat bulb on over the tank for heat above the surface of the tank floor.

Make sure there are plenty of hiding places in there. They love to hide during the day. If you know where it came from kind of mimic its habitat as best you can. They are pretty cool geckos to keep.

To sex it look at the dorsal (belly) side of the geckos body. Near the cloaca there will be some pores present before the tail starts if it is a male. Females do not have that. You could get your gecko a mate, but if you do make sure you do not have 2 males...they fight. It makes things more interesting when you have a male and female together. They do breed pretty easily, which may or may not be what you are looking for.

Mist the tank at least once a day morning or evening or both. Mist it enough where they can drink off the sides of tank or plants you may have in it. The fun part is cleaning the tank. It will try to get out. Have fun and take care of your cool pet.

thank you very much for your help. Also, what is a good living enviroment for the crickets so they wont die on me. Would i also keep a water dish and spray the cage every morning for the gecko??
